March 2004
Cross border trade leads to big savings for Tajik importer

Dushanbe’s newly hired Regional Trade Advisor Pulod Amirbekov concluded his first trade deal for $108,000. This deal between Tajik firm “Murod” and Ukbek exporter “Victoria Trading LLC” is for 3000 metric tons of cement at $36 per ton, including processing and shipping. This not only saves Murod $102,000 on purchasing locally, but gives them cement in 50 kg sacks which is more easily resold to their local construction clients.
In mid February 2004, the firm's director, Mr. Madjidov, requested the USAID Enterprise Development Projects Regional Trade Advisor Pulod Amirbekov's assistance in finding a cement supplier for sales to local construction companies. Although good quality cement is available in Tajikistan, it is very expensive ($70 per metric ton) and is not packaged for resale. Pulod researched several options and found a potential candidate in Uzbekistan. The best choice that he identified was the company "Victoria Trading LLC" in Uzbekistan. This company supplies cement and other constriction materials to Tajikistan from Uzbekistan and is the exporter for the firm "Navoi", where Pulod made his initial inquiries.
After Pulod identify and contact the Ukbek firm, he also coordinated with the USAID Trade Facilitation and Investment Project (TFI) to correct the contract agreement. In the original draft the buyer was held responsible for mistakes in paperwork for customs clearing. Working with TFI to identify and correct this error saved the Tajik buyer from numerous potential difficulties.
